ProtonVPN on Mac

ProtonVPN IKEv2 for Mac Setup (no apps required)


ProtonVPN has launched IKEv2 support, which is natively supported by Apple devices including macOS. This means there is no need to install 3rd party apps to use ProtonVPN on both iPhone and Mac.

This guide has been tweaked from the ProtonVPN manual IKEv2 setup guide for iPhone.

The official ProtonVPN app is still being developed (currently in beta, shown below) and is coming soon! Once this becomes available for you it is definitely worth using to benefit from security updates and quick location switching.


Step One: Download the following config file

Right-click this file and save:

Download ProtonVPN IKEv2 Configuration file

Then open it on your Mac.

Be sure to keep this file somewhere safe incase you need to reinstall it!

A note on security


Step Two: Install the configuration file for ProtonVPN

The process to import the certificate is fairly logical and straight-forth.

The VPN username and password are the credentials set for OpenVPN set in the ProtonVPN Account.

This is not the “VPN Login” that looks like a ProtonMail email address.

Step Three: Manually select your preferred location

By default this profile is set to a Swiss server (, however you this can be changed to the preferred server.

Unsure of the server address?

Simply click ‘Connect’.

Pro-tip: tick the ‘show VPN status in menu bar’ box for a quick way to connect/disconnect.



Uninstall Instructions

It is sufficient to simply remove the configuration in Network Settings by highlighting ProtonVPN then selecting the “-” option.

To completely remove all traces of ProtonVPN find the ‘Profiles’ settings in System Preferences:
